Therapeutic is a 2019 musical in 5 scenes with music and lyrics by Stratis Steele and book by Sean Gibson, that explores the concept of mental health in an entertaining way. Bob, the main character, is a psychiatrist. He is physically (and musically) accompanied by three nurses, who guide him to his patients and who also serve as a device that connects the scenes, and crucially assists in the plot’s progression and outcome. In Therapeutic the whole act takes place in Bob’s head. It represents a reflection of memories combined with a mentally disturbed mind, while the character is undergoing a medical procedure commonly known as electroshock therapy or ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy). All the other characters in the show represent memories that are metamorphosed by the character’s condition and are portrayed as patients in a psychiatric institution. Although the place seems to be identified, time is not. If we were to categorize Therapeutic, it would fall in the genre of the concept musical. Although the plot of Therapeutic plays a vital role in the show’s complexity and musical dramaturgy, it mainly serves as a tool to assist in the formation of the desirable atmosphere and the attraction of the audience. Duration 40 minutes.
